The purpose of this presentation is to summarize the prevalence of dietary supplement use among athletes, highlight issues pertaining to adulteration and mislabeling in dietary supplement products, outline the risks of inadvertent doping for athletes, and highlight best practices regarding safe supplementation strategies. Because of the popularity of dietary supplements, it is important to inform athletes, coaches, and sports medicine staff about the risks vs. benefits regarding dietary supplement use and the likelihood of supplements providing ergogenic benefits, while also acknowledging the potential risks, particularly as it pertains to prohibited substances and anti-doping policies.
The audience will learn how to:
- Define adulteration of dietary supplements and potential causes or sources of contamination.
- Identify prohibited substances as established by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
- Identify high-risk supplements and risks of inadvertent Doping.
- Explain the importance of safe supplementation practice and the value of 3rd party verification organizations.
